More than 140 academicians, activists and student have written to President of Indian Ram Nath Kovind expressing their concerns over denial of justice to students attacked by the Delhi police on 15 December 2019 in New Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia university and the ongoing witch-hunt against the students of the same university, which is coupled with arrests of some students.
In the letter, the signatories alleged that the police continued arresting “the victims of 15 December incident” even during the global Covid-19 pandemic. “If the arresting of victims of 15th December is possible in this situation of pandemic then to safeguard the criminal justice system the investigation should also start against the accused of the 15th of December” they added.
They said that the police have not registered any complaint against themselves as they were accused of aggression in the Jamia university. They further stated, “This raises a question on the criminal justice system of the civilized state that do we ask the murder before registering FIR against him that ‘hey murder (alleged) do we register an FIR against you because you have alleged as an accused in the murder cases”.
They further maintained that any arrest of the students of Jamia or any other university by the Delhi police is with the intention to take revenge. “They wanted to silence the voices that are being raised against their arbitrariness” the signatories added.
They urged the President to intervene in the matter and help justice prevail.
