Guwahati, July 25 : Tayabun Nisha, the first Assamese woman to win a medal in the National Games, was conferred the “Woman of Substance Award 2016” by Women’s Hub, an association of progressive women of Assam. This award is given annually in memory of Yamin Hazarika, the first Assamese police officer to occupy the chair of DCP, Delhi. Yamin was also a member of the UN Peace Keeping Force in Bosnia but died early on account of leukemia.
Earlier in the same function, three new books authored by Syeda Juneina Ahmed, Tinat Atifa Masood, and Morjina Hoque were unveiled by Indrani Raimedhi, renowned author and columnist; Dr Dhruba Saikia, VC, Cotton College State University; and Shantikam Hazarika, former Director of Assam Institute of Management, Guwahati.
A symposium on the subject “Breaking the Stereotype” was organised in which the participants were Nayama Ahmed, Assistant Jailor, Tezpur Central Jail; Darshana Sengupta, the first lady car driving instructor of Guwahati; Megha Kashyap, activist and child rights worker; Afrida Hussain, journalist and channel head; Taanishi Inam, entrepreneur and social worker; and Purnima Das Barman, environmentalist. The symposium was moderated by Sabrina Iqbal Sircar, faculty, Cotton College State University, Guwahati.
Teresa Rehman, Managing Editor of the Thumbprint e-magazine, and Nellie Ahmed Tanweer, educationist, who were the prime movers of the programme thanked the civil society of Guwahati for their overwhelming response to the idea of perpetuating the memory of the role model Assamese police officer, Yamin Hazarika. Yamin’s family members were present on the occasion.
