London : Close on the heels of Sadiq Khan’s appointment as Mayor of London, Bangladeshi origin Nadia Shah has been appointed the Mayor of Camden for 2016/17.
Shah who’s roots go back to Kulaura of Moulvibazar in Bangladesh has become the first female of Bangladeshi origin to have taken on the position of Camden’s Mayor.
Born and raised in Camden where as a teenager she had been involved in social work, volunteering in and managing projects related to drug addiction and abuse she is also Labour party Councillor from a ward called Regents Park.
Nadia did her graduation from Greenwich University and then worked as investment advertiser at NatWest Bank of England. She has also worked at many local and central government departments.
Her husband Jajil Shah works as the chief of Information Technology department at Camden Council.
In Nadia Shah’s own words: “I went to school in Camden and I’ve worked here all my working life and am very proud to take on the role of Mayor of Camden.”
“My work has given me an insight into the struggles that people face in their lives, and the support needed for them to flourish. I’m passionate about helping people to get the most out of life – from basic rights, to enabling opportunity and equality.
“Over the years I have worked with a number of organisations in Camden to improve access to services for the less able people, disadvantaged and vulnerable. I look forward to using my time as mayor to make a positive impact for those who need that extra support the most” she said.
While she is the Mayor of Camden, Shah intends to raise funds of Anna Freud Centre which she has chosen as her official charity. Anna Freud Centre assists young people struggling with mental health issues by providing direct clinical services to families and also by undertaking pioneering research. The centre provides assistance to extremely vulnerable groups by executing their services in homeless hostels, youth centres and schools.
Katy Vaughan, Head of Fundraising at Anna Freud Centre, expressed joy at Shah’s appointment and said: “We are delighted to have the support of the Mayor of Camden. We will continue to work with some of the most vulnerable children and families in the area and this recognition will help raise awareness of mental health issues. It will also be a fantastic boost to our fundraising efforts”.
