British Schools running in accordance with Islamic values top the charts in GCSE League Tables for showing maximum improvement

In this year’s GCSE League Table – a consolidated list of British government’s ranking of secondary schools – the top three positions for progress were bagged by Muslim faith schools. While Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School situated in the town of Blackburn ranked first, Eden Boys’ School in Birmingham and Eden Girls’ school in Coventry ranked second and third respectively. The schools secured these ranks for showing maximum improvement in their pupils’ test scores between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4.

The GCSE League Table – a British Government initiative – is a list consolidated each year, according to a nation- wide survey of all the schools. This survey takes into account various key parameters including academic attainment and the percentage of students who stay on for further education, since compulsory education policy is applicable only till the age of 16 years. The United Kingdom government uses the ‘Progress 8’ framework against which the schools’ performances are measured. It is based on results in up to 8 qualifications, which include English, maths, 3 English Baccalaureate including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages, and 3 other additional approved qualifications. Students’ progress, in addition to their grades, is also included as a criterion for judgement.

All the three schools were classified as “well above average” on the Progress 8 scale. While Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School had a total of 2.17 score, Eden Boys’ School and Eden Girls’ school rounded off with 1.7 and 1.61 respectively.

In a press statement released thereafter, the Muslim council of Britain applauded the efforts of faith schools and underscored the importance of it by measuring it against the “backdrop of greater scrutiny on faith schools generally”

“(It) shows that many of these schools are in fact high-achieving despite negative perceptions”, the statement read.

“Credit must go to the teachers, parents, and of course students, at these high performing Muslim faith schools for their excellent achievement. Their results show that with hard-work and dedication children of all backgrounds and in any educational setting can achieve their utmost.” Harun Khan, Secretary General of the MCB said in a press statement.
