New Delhi : In a gesture of solidarity, students and members of the faculty, Jamia Millia Islamia took a peaceful rally today to protest against the suspension and social boycott of five Dalit students of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), which culminated in the tragic suicide of research scholar Rohit Vemula. Students expressed their anger against casteism by shouting out slogans against Brahminical ideology. The slogans also targeted Mod Govt. and MHRD for being involved in the conspiracy that compelled Rohit to take this serious step.
Students from various forums including AISA, JSF etc. united under one banner and also burnt Effigy of Smirit Irani, who have not come up with any logical or responsible statement so far.
The Protest started at Dr Zakir Hussain Central Library where Rohit’s suicide letter was read aloud, which moistened many eyes in the gathering. One of Rohit’s batch mate, Shafat also spoke to the students and explained how active had Rohit been on Campus. “He was excellent in academics, and was a big opposition to Injustice of all sorts, maybe that’s why he was targeted so badly, I would call the incident a murder and not a Suicide” said Shafat.
The rally went all over the main campus and dispersed near the Central canteen where student representatives from different forums addressed the gathering. Dr Pradyumna Bag, Professor at Department of sociology expressed his anxiety and anger on how castesim is being deeply institutionalized in almost all spheres, be it state, education or school curriculum.
