PM Narendra Modi’s frequent foreign trips have failed to turn world opinion in the favour of his government as recently an annual report just-released by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) 2016 expressed concern on the deteriorating religious atmosphere in the country under Modi rule.
‘In 2015, religious tolerance deteriorated and religious freedom violations increased in India. Minority communities, especially Christians, Muslims, and Sikhs, experienced numerous incidents of intimidation, harassment, and violence, largely at the hands of Hindu nationalist groups’.the report said.
The report further added,’Members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tacitly supported these groups and used religiously-divisive language to further inflame tensions. These issues, combined with longstanding problems of police bias and judicial inadequacies, have created a pervasive climate of impunity, where religious minority communities feel increasingly insecure, with no recourse when religiously-motivated crimes occur.’
Making a specific mention of the present BJP government ,the report commented that ‘Since the BJP assumed power, religious minority communities have been subject to derogatory comments by BJP politicians and numerous violent attacks and forced conversions by affiliated Hindu nationalist groups, such as Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Sangh Parivar, and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).’
The report also mentioned among others like Restrictions on Cow Slaughter, Violations against Christians, Anti-Conversion Laws, Hindu Nationalist Groups and Forced Conversions, Violations against Sikhs, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Dalits) under the title Religious Freedom Conditions 2015–2016.
However, the government seemed little concerned about the US report as an external affairs ministry spokesperson said, “We take no cognizance of their report,”
The report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).the spokesperson added, “has failed to show proper understanding of India, its constitution and its society”.
The report also made certain recommendations among others like the US government should pursue with the Indian counterpart like integrating ‘ concern for religious freedom into bilateral contacts with India’.Also ‘Urge the Indian government to publicly rebuke government officials and religious leaders that make derogatory statements about religious communities.’
It may be noted here that in the month of March a three-member delegation of US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) was to visit India but the government of India had denied visa to them.
