ALIGARH, 24 Nov 2014 : Inaugurating an International Conference on “Well-being and Human Development” organized by the Department of Psychology, Aligarh Muslim University, Professor Grishwar Misra, Vice Chancellor, M G Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishvidyalaya, Vardha said that we needed to adopt a multidisciplinary approach towards to attain a greater degree of well-being and human development. He lambasted that humans were being used by emerging market.
A large number of delegates from India and abroad are participating in the three-day conference.
In his presidential remarks, AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah said that well being is a positive outcome that is meaningful for people and for many sections of society, because it reveals to people if their lives are worthy of being.
Gen. Shah said that well-being must be balanced between the mind, body and spirit. These elements of life have equal importance. Achieving balance among these various functions is the essence and the objective of human existence.
Prof. Naima Gulrez, Convener of the Conference said that psychologists of different fields of specialization and experts of different discipline have gathered here to prove that we are united by a common desire and objective to work towards improving the well-being of individuals and societies.
Prof. Shahina Maqbool, Chairperson, Department of Psychology highlighted the achievements of her departments and said that Department of Psychology enjoys the privilege of being one of the oldest departments in the sub continent. She said that more than 200 Ph.D. degrees have so far been awarded by the Department and the number of M.Phil. produced is more than 150.
Prof. Shahina Maqbool said that the products of this departments were scattered in different parts of the world and held positions of prominence in USA, Canada, UK, Norway, Germany, Australia, Iran, Bahrain, Indonesia, Thailand, Iraq and Saudi Arabia etc.
Professor Akbar Husain, Coordinator, UGC-SAP (DRS-I) pointed out that for laying the foundation of a healthier society, we needed new models of human well-being and development. Thoughts and attitudes associated with childhood were to be replaced with structures of a civilization that reflected our adulthood. It required the holistic aspect of well-being that had become operating principle of our life.
Prof. Hamida Ahmad, Former Dean, Faculty of Social Science said that she was associated with this department from its inception. She was appointed lecturer of Psychology in 1968 at Women’s College of this University and used to frequent to take postgraduate classes in the department.
Prof. Habib Ahmad, a distinguished alumnus of this department said that he learn worthiness from his elders. He urged students to be prepared to face challenges of future life.
Prof. NAK Durrani, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences highlighted the objectives of the three-day international conference.
Prof. Shamim Ansari proposed a vote of thanks. He said that several foreign delegates would deliver lectures in their fields of expertise.
