Ms. Anam Rais Khan, Secretary, Law Society, who was the convener of the session extended a warm welcome to Hon’ble Justice Katju on behalf of the Faculty of Law, AMU. She said, “It is a great honor to have among us a legal luminary and a Justice who is not only known for his judgments but also for making his profession a service to mankind.”
Prof. Iqbal Ali Khan, Dean, Faculty of Law, AMU in his introductory remarks presented a brief profile of the Hon’ble speaker Justice Katju. Admitting the fact that the Justice needed no introduction, he put on record his great achievements. “His was the fastest court, disposing off over 100 cases per week”, Prof. Khan said. This he said, clearly demonstrates the legal acumen as well as social accountability possessed by Justice Katju.
Hon’ble Justice Katju exclaimed that he shares a special bond with AMU which is, and has always been a hub of unmatched excellence and its alumni are spread all over the world acquiring some of the highest and important positions. He enlightened the law students about ‘Constitutional Jurisprudence’ emphasizing the need for the Indian society to change its perspective and attitude towards the deeply embedded caste-ism and communal-ism. He added that merely enacting laws to curb these menaces won’t eradicate them unless the citizens root them out of their hearts and minds.
The house was then left open for students’ interaction with the speaker. Many students raised certain pertinent queries to which Justice Katju responded overwhelmingly.
Prof. Javed Talib proposed the vote of thanks. He said that presence of Justice Katju at the Law Faculty to interact with law students, despite his tight schedule is evident of his deep love and affection for the legal fraternity as well as for the Aligarh Muslim University.
