New Delhi: Defending 12 per cent reservation announcement for Muslims in the newly carved state of Telangana, Lok Sabha member Kalvakuntla Kavitha averred that TRS government is serious and sincere about providing reservation to the minority community in government jobs and education.
Telangana’s first chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao ( Known as also KCR) on Friday reiterated his government’s commitment to ensure 12 percent each reservation for minorities and tribals in education and jobs during reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the governor’s address in the newly constituted assembly .
Talking to Muslim Mirror, K Kavitha, who was elected from the Nizamabad Parliamentary seat, said chief minister Chandrashekhar Rao fulfilled his promise by appointing a Muslim as Deputy Chief Minister of the state. TRS has made promise during the elections to Assembly and Parliament that if it comes to power in the new state it will make a Dalit and a Muslim as deputy chief ministers, she said adding that not only Mohammad Mahmood Ali was made deputy CM but he was given important portfolio of revenue. Earlier in Congress governments, Muslims generally used to get lesser important portfolios such minority affairs or waqf.
In reply to a question, how 12 per cent quota will implemented as Supreme Court has put a cap of 50 per cent, Kavitha said, who is also the daughter of KCR, the government knows the legal hurdles that is why it has announced that two commissions would be set up to look into the issue which would give reports in three months to justify the decision for increasing percentage of reservations for minorities and STs. Citing the examples of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, she said in both the states reservation quota is over 50 per cent that can happen in Telangana also. Lauding her father’s passion for backward classes and minority communities, she said the KCR’s commitment for betterment of minorities and backward classes is out of conviction and compassion not for any political gain.
It is to be recalled that the late chief minister of the united Andhra Pradesh Rajasekhara Reddy’s had proposed five per cent reservation for Muslims but the Supreme Court had brought down it to four per cent. The total reservation would shoot up to 64 per cent KCR has his way of increasing the quota. Presently, OBCs get 25%, SCs 15%, STs six per cent and Muslims four per cent reservation in the state.
Kavitha has insisted that the new government of Telangana will fulfill all promises it made to the people of the state. She also hinted that one more Muslim will be inducted the KCR cabinet. TRS has won 70 seats in the 119-mmeber Telangana assembly and 11 parliamentary seats. Lone Muslim MLA of TRS is Mohammad Shakil who was elected from Bodhan assembly seat. Kavitha, who won from the Nizamabad seat having sizable Muslims population, is the founder of Telangana Jagruthi which is known for Telangana cultural activities. Before joining electoral politics, she was active in the agitation for separate statehood for Telangana.
