New Delhi, May 26: Over one week has passed since the Uttar Pradesh government sent request for a CBI probe into the mysterious death of terror undertrial Khalid Mujahid in police custody. The Congress-led UPA government – which has outside support of Samajwadi Party, the ruling party of Uttar Pradesh – has not yet allowed CBI which works under the central government to take up the case.
Mujahid, an accused in the 2007 court blast case, died in police van while returning from Faizabad court to Lucknown Jail on 18th May. Following the demand from his family and human rights activists, Akhilesh Yadav, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, on 19th May sent a request for CBI probe into the death. One week has passed the central government has not yet taken any decision.
Meanwhile, Rihai Manch, a civil group working for the release of innocents, is sitting on indefinite dharna outside the Assembly building in Lucknow demanding suspension and arrest of the 42 police officers named in the FIR filed by the family of Khalid Mujahid.
Mujahid and co-accused Tariq Qasmi were illegally arrested in December 2007, a month after the blasts in court premises in UP. Their illegal arrest was probed by government appointed RD Nimesh commission. Six months on, the state government has not yet made public the report.
