Azamgarh, May 26: Braving the scorching sun of the summer noon, hundreds of people came out on street on Saturday here to demand justice for Khalid Mujahid who was killed in police custody on 18th May. Gathered under the banner of Rashtriya Ulema Council, people expressed doubt over the official version about the death of terror under-trial Mujahid, neighboring Jaunpur native who was picked in 2007 for the court blast of the same year but his very arrest was declared illegal and fake by the government appointed RD Nimesh Commission.
Leaders of Rashtriya Ulema Council including national president Maulana Amir Rashadi and national general secretary Maulana Tahir Madani demanded constitution of Special Investigation Team under the chairmanship of a sitting judge of Supreme Court to probe the death of Mujahid. They pointed out various proofs that show he did not die of heat stroke or heart attack as the police and government had claimed. They said when they visited the Barabanki hospital in the night on 18th May, blood was still coming out from Mujahid’s nose and year and his nails were black – clear evidence of foul play behind his death.
Rashtriya Ulema Council also demanded immediate arrest of the police officers named in the FIR filed by Mujahid’s family, release of the RD Nimesh Commission report and release of Mujahid’s co-accused Tariq Qasmi.
The party – which was born in the wake of Batla House encounter of September 2008 wherein two youths of Azamgarh were killed in Jamia Nagar – has warned of state-wide public agitation against the Samajwadi Party government if the demands were not met.
The gathering was also addressed by other leaders of the party including national vice president Maulana Nizamuddin Islahi, national treasurer Maulana Shahab Akhtar Qasmi, national secretary Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Rizwi, national secretary Lal Devendra Singh Chauhan.
The gathering was also addressed by Maulana Zaheer Alam Falahi, uncle of Khalid Mujahid.
