By Dr. Muhsin Raza,
The matter of Minority character was pending at Supreme Court for a long time. Its hearing is due in next few says We are sure that AMU Vice Chancellor Gen Shah is willing to invest all that he has at his command, because of his declared firm commitment to the cause. He has repeatedly mentioned it as his top priority.
AMU came into existence, by an act 0f 1920, but it was an upgradation of already existing Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College. All the property of MAO College automatically became the property of AMU.
The MAO College was a part of Muslim Educational movement, led by Syed Ahmad. It was established by the combined and united efforts of whole community. Not by British Government.
At the time of laying of foundation stone of ‘Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College’ by the then Viceroy of India Lord Lytton, on 2nd Jan 1879 Sir Syed gave a speech, as follows:
“The College of which your Excellency is about to lay the foundation stone differs in many important aspects from all the other institutions which the country has seen. There have been Schools & colleges founded and endowed by Private Individuals. There have been others built by Sovereign supported by revenues of State.
But this is first time in the History of Mohammedans of India that a College owes its existence neither to the Charity, nor love of learning of an individual, nor to the splendid patronage of a monarch.
BUT TO THE COMBINED AND UNITED EFFORTS OF WHOLE COMMUNITY
It has its origin in causes which the history of this community has never witnessed before.”
Aligarh Muslim University is a Minority Institution. If AMU is not, then which other Institution can be of minority. We hope that the government will stay at its previous stance of support.
It is also very important to call upon the goodness of every member of community, students, teachers, alumni and sympathizers to understand and be clear about the ground realities. There must not be any disturbance at AMU or elsewhere. Any demonstrations or street calls will not favorably affect the judgement. On the contrary, it will be counter-productive and will jeopardize the cause.
All the groups should keep their differences stalled for some time. The AMUTA and all others should show solidarity with the cause.
Invisible forces, who don’t contribute to conceptual consistency, yet observable in their effects, will attempt to violate the original spirit. Many innocent UNAWARES may join them.
The AMU students are extremely sane. They will thwart all such attempts.
‘World of Aligs’ urge upon all concerned to support Vice Chancellor Zameeruddin Shah and former Vice Chancellor Mr Naseem Ahmad in their endeavour.
