New Delhi: Demanding the CBI probe into the assassination of dacoit-turn-politician Phoolan Devi on Saturday here, her husband Ummed Singh said there are two laws prevailed in this country saying when a black deer was killed by actor Salman Khan a CBI inquiry was set up but not for Phoolan Devi who was then a sitting member parliament. He also attacked the BJP saying when Phoolan Devi was killed on July 25, 2001, the BJP was in power at the Center but it did not set up any inquiry that shows its prejudice towards backward classes.
Addressing a press conference along with his Eklavya Sena (Morcha) leaders, Ummed Singh said his organization will teach a lesson to the ruling BJP in the coming general elections. Our community (Nishad and Kashyap) will launch a nationwide stir to press the demand for a CBI inquiry, he said.
When asked why he is demanding a probe after a long-18 years, he quipped that we have been constantly making this demand as we have given memorandum to then Prime Minister and Home Minister but they did not give any heed to this. He alleged that there is an upper-caste bias still persists in the system.
Phoolan Devi, a Samajwadi Party (SP) MP, was murdered in broad daylight at her resident 44, Ashoka Road in Delhi in 2001 which is high security zone area.
Phoolan Devi had grabbed the national headline through her act of revenge – in the Behmai massacre in 1981. She avenged the atrocities and sexual harassment against her from the 22 Rajputs and her act was portrayed by the media as an act of righteous rebellion.
Phoolan evaded capture for two years but surrendered to the police in 1983 along with few of the surviving gang-members of her faction. She was charged with 48 crimes, including multiple murders, plunder, arson and kidnapping for ransom and spent the next eleven years in jail. In 1994, the UP government under Mulayam Singh Yadav withdrew all charges against her, and she was released. She then stood for election to parliament as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party and was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Mirzapur.
The Eklavya Sena (Morcha), which represents Nishad community, announced that it will to stage a protest at Rafi Marg, Patel Chowk on January 8 to press for CBI probe into the brutal murder of Phoolan Devi.
