Opposition mega rally highlights : BJP’s ‘achhe din’ over, says Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: In a  strong display of opposition unity ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, more than twenty national leaders across the country, assembled at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade ground. The Opposition Unity rally, moderated and organised by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, witnessed millions of supporters. Some of the national leaders included three present chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Chandrababu Naidu and H D Kumaraswamy; and former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah,  Akhilesh Yadav  and Gegong Apang attended the meeting.

Addressing the millions of supporters  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raked up the issue of BJP’s rath yatra in the state to say she will not allow riots in the name of rath yatra. Attacking the BJP, she said, “I will not allow communal violence in the name of Rath Yatra. We will not allow BJP to run amok in Bengal. BJP will be wiped out from state to state. No acche din under the Modi government. People have made up their mind to oust the BJP government. Our country does not believe in the politics of divide and rule.”

“BJP’s ‘acche din’ is over,  a new government will be formed at the Centre. It is inevitable. Their expiry date has come. This is people’s verdict,” she added.

Addressing the rally former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda said that the BJP government at Centre is victimising leaders of Opposition parties using all machinery. He said this while refering to the CBI’s action against Akhilesh Yadav in mining scam in Uttar Pradesh between 2012 and 2016.

Accusing the Narendra Modi and Amit Shah pair of planting hatred in the country, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal  said the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will not be for electing a new Prime Minister but to remove the dictatorial BJP regime.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu  termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the “publicity Prime Minister” and said the nation needs a new Prime Minister who can perform.

“This Prime Minister is a publicity Prime Minister, not a performing Prime Minister. He and his government have betrayed the nation.

“The country wants a performing Prime Minister, someone who would work for the betterment of the poor,” Naidu said here at Mamata Banerjee’s united opposition rally.

Accusing the BJP of having aligned with central agencies like the CBI and the ED, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav  appealed to the opposition to come together and defeat the conspiracies being hatched to divide alliance partners in states.

Dubbing the BJP government at the Centre as a ‘failure’, which has “disappointed and defrauded the nation and its people”, the SP leader accused the Modi regime of “spreading hatred” in society,

Addressing the ‘United India’ rally, former J&K chief minister Farooq Abdullah called Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) ‘chor’ machines and said opposition leaders must urge the poll panel to do away with them.

BJP rebel leader Shatrughan Sinha slammed Mogi government for implementing demonetisation in haste. He warned his party to come out clean on Rafale deal. “HAL was not given the contract to build aircraft. Please, come clean with facts on Rafael otherwise you will have to hear: Chowkidar Chor Hai, Chowkidar Chor Hai, Chowkidar Chor Hai,” he said.

Earlier, ex-BJP leader and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha urged opposition parties to make the country’s “failing economy” as the election issue in upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
