Shillong: In keeping with the theme of International Peace Day – 2017 “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All”, University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya observed the International Peace Dayon Thursday at Techno City on the outskirts of Guwahati where representatives from all faiths addressed a large gathering of students and teachers in presence of administrative officials of the University and ERD Foundation.
“There is a higher court than courts of justice, and that is the court of conscience. It supersedes all other courts,” quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor USTM, urged the students to develop a mindset of love and respect for one another so that peace can be nurtured and retained in the society. He further stated, “We must work for peace and brotherhood for inclusive progress of mankind.’
The religious guides from various faiths have urged the students to understand the importance of retaining peace and harmony in the world. They said that the youth of this nation can contribute immensely for mainlining peace in the country as it is directly related to the development and prosperity of the nation. Among those who addressed the congregation were Damayanti Devi, Head, Kasturba Ashram Guwahati; Fr Alfonso, Director North East Social Communications; and Quari Tayab Sahab, Islamic scholar.
The International Day of Peace is observed around the world each year on September 21. Commencing from 1981 by means of a unanimous United Nations resolution, the General Assembly of UN has declared this day as a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”
