Kolkata: TMC candidate Sajda Ahmed, wife of late MP Sultan Ahmed (whose death had paved the way for the Uluberia bypoll) received 7,67,219 votes and won by a margin of 4,74,201 votes. In 2014, Sultan Ahmed had won the seat by a margin of more than 2 lakh votes. The party also increased its vote share by 13 per cent.
BJP finished as a distant runner-up with 2.93 lakh votes.
The Trinamool Congress of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had fielded Sajda Ahmed, wife of former union minister Sultan Ahmed, from the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency. The polling for the seat was held on January 29.
Sultan Ahmad was Union Minister of State for Tourism in the Manmohan Singh government of Congress-led UPA. He was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Uluberia as candidate of Trinamool Congress.He had previously been a 2-time Congress MLA for Entally.
