GUWAHATI, JULY 20: Tinat Atifa Masood, who took over charge as the new President of the Rotary Club of Guwahati at a glittering installation ceremony at the Rotary Centre in Guwahati on Tuesday night, became the second woman to lead the oldest Rotary Club of Assam which has had the privilege of having the former President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as one of its members at one time. Tinat, incidentally, is also the youngest ever President to take over charge of RC Guwahati. Bandana Dutta was the first woman to be elected as the President of RC Guwahati. She was elected for the term 2004-05 when the world was celebrating centenary of the Rotary movement. Her tenure was marked by spectacular performance by the Club that brought it laurels from India and abroad.
Abdul Raqib, the outgoing President of RC Guwahati, presented a report covering the activities under various segments of service during the term 2015-16. He informed the audience that a new Rotaract Club named ‘Rotaract Club of Anamika Residency’ comprising only girls students from colleges, was established in Guwahati during the just concluded Rotary year.
“We have to unlearn the process of working in isolation and learn the art of hand-holding,” Dr Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor of the Gauhati University, who was the chief guest on the occasion, spoke ever so eloquently at the 62nd installation of the RC Guwahati, as the audience listened in rapt silence. He also focussed on school education and felt that the country needs to give more emphasis on the matter. He stated that while 62 per cent of schools in India do not have boundary walls, students in only 16 per cent of schools have access to computers.
Among many outstanding personalities of the region, Saeedulla Nongrum, former Health Minister of Meghalaya was also present at the installation. The dignitaries present unveiled the special issue of the Club bulletin “Pragjyotee” published to mark the occasion.
