Fear has gripped Muslims of Srilanka as one of Sri Lanka’s highest Buddhist authority figures – Asigiri Chapter Prelate Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana has called for the stoning of Muslims.
He also urged Sinhala Buddhists to refrain from frequenting Muslim-owned shops and consuming food offered by Muslims. Astonishingly he remains untouched; no charges have yet been brought against the Asigiri Chief prelate.
Aljazeerq reported that activists, politicians and members of the Muslim minority said Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero’s speech last week was likely to fan communal tensions, weeks after Buddhist mobs attacked scores of Muslim homes and businesses.
The riots were an apparent response to deadly bombings on churches and hotels on Easter Sunday that killed more than 250 people and were claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISILor ISIS) group. Sri Lankan authorities blamed the attacks on two small Muslim groups.
Mayantha here was talking earlier about how Muslims shouldn’t be sidelined… But even I will say now, don’t go to these Muslim owned shops, dont’ consume the food they offer,” the Asgiri Chief prelate said while adding, “The Muslims don’t love us [Sinhalese]…” he said.
He went on to state that it is a well known fact that Muslims have poisoned ‘our people’ [Sinhalese] and that they have been plotting to destroy ‘our people’. The thera says therefore it is of paramount importance that Buddhists protect themselves.
However, Finance Minister of Srilanka Mangala Samaraweera has hit back at controversial and racially charged comment and called on ‘true Buddhists’ to unite against the Talibanisation of the philosophy.
