More than Six lakh Indians gave up their citizenship in the past five years, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanad Rai informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

This year, till September 30, 1,11,287 Indians gave up their citizenship. Moreover, 1,33,049 Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 2017, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,44,017 in 2019 and 85,248 in 2020.

Congress national spokesperson Shama Mohamed slammed the Modi government over the same. She said the data showed an “exodus of talent”. She tweeted on Tuesday “India is seeing an exodus of talent like never before in history. Economic blunders such as demonetisation & the buldozing of democratic rights by the Modi govt have led to this!”

Taking a jibe at the staunch supporters of BJP and RSS, HW News founder Sujit Nair said in a Facebook post, “Why are Indians Emigrating in such large numbers??? is it because Hindutva is in danger? Or is it because UPA was a corrupt government? Or is it because Rahul Gandhi takes too many vacations? Or was it because Nehru messed everything up???”

He added that Indians go abroad for jobs, more pay, better life. Something that they don’t get it India. And you know why they don’t get these in India? That’s because, we do not vote for more jobs, for better health and education.
