Since 2014, India has seen a dramatic increase in the overall number of suicides, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
According to the most recent report, 1 in 4 of the 1,64,033 suicides that were reported occurred last year while the victim was a daily wage worker.
According to “Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India” report, the daily wage earner remained the largest group (profession-wise) among total number of suicide victims in 2021. The group accounts for 42,004 suicides or 25.6% of the total suicide victims.
With 37,666 or 24.6% of the 1,53,052 suicides that were registered in the nation in 2020, the daily wage earners also made up the largest share of suicide victims’ statistics.
Of the 1,39,123 suicides that were reported in 2019, daily wage workers made up 23.4% of the total.
In 2021, the number of suicides in the country’s daily wage earner group grew by 11.52% compared to 2020, while the number of suicides nationwide climbed by 7.17% over the same year.
The number of suicide cases reported each state is also included in the most recent NCRB report. Karnataka is one of the top five states in the nation for the percentage of suicides in 2021. After Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh, the state is in fifth place.
Maharashtra accounted for 13.5% of all suicides, followed by Tamil Nadu (11.5%), Madhya Pradesh (9.1%), West Bengal (8.2%), and Karnataka (8%).
Over 50% of all suicides in India are accounted for by these top five states, which include Karnataka. The remaining instances came from the eight Union Territories and the 23 other states.
The report also reveals that among all Union Territories in India, Delhi, which is the most populous, had the highest number of suicides (2,840), followed by Puducherry (504).
In the 53 megacities across the country in 2021, 25,891 suicides were recorded in total.
