68 people have been transferred to the state’s newly established ‘Detention Center’ in Goalpara. The people who’ve been declared as foreigners would be sent gradually through a transit camp 150 kilometres away from Guwahati.
This centre, which was constructed in Goalpara (Assam), is the first of its kind in the state of Assam and is exclusively for foreign people who are living there ‘illegally’.
It was created in accordance with the Central Government’s regulations. Six “Detention Centers” have been established in Assam up until this point for such individuals. They are all confined to the prisons.
According to the Indian Express, those relocated to the Goalpara transit camp include individuals who were labelled “foreigners” by the Assam Foreigners Tribunals as well as those who were labelled “foreigners”.
Barnali Sharma, the Inspector General of Prisons in Assam, reported that 45 of the 68 individuals who have been moved to the transit camp are men, 21 are women, and two are children. They have been recognised as being from abroad.
In addition to Kokrajhar District Jail and Goalpara District Jail in Assam, there are existing ‘detention centres’ at Tezpur Central Jail, Silchar Central Jail, Dibrugarh Central Jail, and Jorhat Central Jail. According to data from the government, there were 195 individuals living in all of these as of September 2022.
