Authorities in the German state of Berlin announced on Wednesday that Muslim teachers will now be permitted to wear headscarves.
According to Anadolu Agency, Headscarves and wearing of religious symbols by teachers will be allowed in general and can only be restricted in individual cases if it poses a danger to school peace, Berlin’s education department said, in an official letter sent to school directors.
Since 2005, teachers in Berlin have been prohibited from wearing headscarves under Berlin’s neutrality act, which prohibits government employees from wearing religious clothing or symbols.
However, several recent court decisions have emphasised that a blanket ban on headscarves is discriminatory and violates religious freedom promised by the constitution.
The Senate Department of Education, Youth, and Families advised school administrators to follow recent judicial decisions.
