New Delhi: In a letter from prison, activist Akhil Gogoi has described All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) as ”communal” amongst the opposition parties. ”We do not desire to take along a communal party with fundamentalist ideology to oppose a communal and fascist party,” he wrote.
”We think the BJP and the AIUDF are two sides of the same coin,” wrote Gogoi, adding that they strengthened each other. ”If we take them along with us, we will be weakened ethically, ideologically and politically.”
He further urged that only one joint opposition candidate should be fielded in every constituency against the BJP.

Last month, Congress, which has allied with AIUDF to fight assembly polls in Assam, had defended the party. The Congress had said that AIUDF only talks about the welfare of Muslims, which is not a crime.
”Talking about the welfare of Muslims or the people of his own religion is not a crime unless he (AIUDF chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal) hates the people of other religions. Ajmal has never been anti-Hindu,” Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora had told PTI.
