New Delhi: Congress party workers in Bhopal launched an awareness campaign about fund collection for the Ram Mandir that is being built on the site where the Babri Masjid stood till its demolition by Hindu extremists on 6 December 1991.

The campaign, led by former minister and incumbent MLA P C Sharma, was started to tell people that they should deposit all their donation in the account of the Ram Mandir Trust and not to anyone else, Times of India reported.

After the recital of the ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in the morning, Congress distributed pamphlets here in the state capital for the Ram Temple.

The party put up a photograph of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the pamphlets and posters in order to indicate that Mr Gandhi had laid foundation stone of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya in 1989.

The same photo had gone viral several months ago with the aforementioned claim. However, India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that the viral image is not related to any foundation ceremony. This is the picture of late former PM Rajiv Gandhi receiving a copy of Bhagavad Gita in the Russian language from Soviet Hare Krishnas of ISKCON in New Delhi in 1989.

”We have given bank account numbers of the Ram Mandir Trust. The construction has started after the verdict of the Supreme Court. We are appealing to the people to donate funds to the trust’s bank accounts only,” Sharma said.

He added that this campaign would be run across Madhya Pradesh. ”We will distribute the pamphlets not just in Bhopal but across Madhya Pradesh, appealing to people that donations be deposited in the accounts of Ram Mandir Trust only,” he added.
