New Delhi: The year 2011 saw 1,332 inmates dying in jails in India. Natural deaths were 1,244 while 88 unnatural, revealed ‘Prison Statistics India 2011’ report recently released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) which works under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to the report, of 1332 inmates, 43 were women — out of which 8 deaths were suicidal in nature.
The report says that on 31st December 2011, there were 3,72,926 prisoners in jails in India, 75,053 of them were Muslims – that is over 20%. The community accounts for 14% of the national population.
