New Delhi: Delhi Waqf Board’s counsel Sr. Adv. Ramesh Gupta on Tuesday urged the Delhi High Court to allow at least people to assemble at Markaz Mosque tomorrow, as opposed to the currently permitted 5. However, the court refused to pass an order in this regard, reported Live Law.
While hearing the Waqf Board’s plea seeking permission for devotees to pray at the masjid in Nizamuddin Markaz during the period of Ramadan, the Delhi High Court bench of Justice Mukta Gupta directed Centre to file a detailed report in the matter.
Gupta directed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to state on affidavit the stand taken today that all religious, political, academic, social, sports etc gatherings have been barred by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in light of spiking Covid-19 numbers in the capital.
This comes a day after the centre told the Delhi High Court that the mosque could be made operational subject to DDMA’s Covid-19 guidelines.
Waqf Board’s counsel Ramesh Gupta said that restrictions with respect to the Markaz Mosque are ”discriminatory”.
Appearing for the Centre and Delhi Police, Mehta refuted Gupta’s claim and said, “There are 13,000 fresh Covid-19 cases in Delhi, Corona Virus cannot tell the difference between religions,” he said.
The Centre has been accused of double standards as it has done nothing to stop the assembly of lakhs at Kumbh Mela in Uttarakhand and several ruling party politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been holding rallies in election-bound states despite a surge in Covid-19 cases.
