New Delhi: The Special Cell of Delhi Police claims to have arrested Abdul Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer, who allegedly co-founded the Indian Mujahideen (IM). Qureshi – a resident of Rampur in Madhya Pradesh whom the cops described as as a “techie-bomber” – was arrested on Monday following a “brief exchange of fire” in the national capital.
Special Cell Deputy Commissioner of Police PS Kushwah the young man had “mastermind of the 2008 serial blasts in Gujarat”. “We have arrested India’s most wanted terrorist Abdul Subhan Qureshi who is the co-founder of the Indian Mujahideen. He was staying in Nepal on forged documents and came back to India to revive the Indian Mujahideen,” he told the media in a press briefing.
The officer did not divulge further details.
A few years ago, according to reports, the National Investigation Agency had announced a reward of Rs 4 lakh on the information leading to Qureshi’s arrest.
The investigators say Qureshi is accused of being originally a commander of the banned outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), who later, with the help of other terrorists, launched the IM.
He is also allegedly involved in various terror-related cases being investigated by the police of Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
In addition to an arrest warrant by a local court in Gujarat for his alleged involvement in the July 26, 2008 serial blasts case, a Red Corner Notice had also been issued against him by the Interpol.
The Gujarat bombings were a series of 21 bomb blasts that hit Ahmedabad within a span of 70 minutes. A total of 56 people were killed and over 200 people were injured.
