Chicago : The renowned scholar and interpreter of Qur’an, Dr. Irfan Ahmad Khan, breathed his last on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at a hospital close to his home in Markham, Illinois near Chicago. He would have celebrated his 88th birthday on April 7 but Allah called him back toward the eternal abode. Born in Saharanpur, UP, India in 1931, Irfan Ahmad Khan joined Aligarh Muslim University in the early fifties. He obtained his B. Sc. and M. A. degrees from Aligarh and also spent two years at the Sanvi Darashgahe Islami, Rampur for higher education in Arabic, Quranic and hadith studies. After teaching Western Philosophy, Muslim Theology and Indian Religions at AMU during 1958-73, he moved to the U. S. in 1974. Later he obtained a Ph.D. in Western Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1986. He taught Islamic Philosophy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Religion at The University of Iowa, School of Art Institute of Chicago, and American Islamic College, Chicago.
In the early sixties, he co-edited “Islamic Thought,” a journal dedicated to Islamic Research and thoughts. In 2005 the Islamic Foundation, United Kingdom published Reflections on the Qur’an, an eight hundred pages of a methodical study of al-Fatihah and al-Baqarah. It is a monumental work for understanding and interpreting the first two surahs (Divine Discourses) of the Qur’an from a contemporary perspective. Dr. Irfan was the president of the Association for Quranic Understanding which published, An Outline Study of the Last Thirty Divine Discourses (Surah 85 – Surah 114).
The mission of his life was to connect people with the Divine Guidance of God, Qur’an. He had been conducting a weekly Quranic discourse session via web each Wednesday at 9:00 pm central time. It was attended by people from all over the world. He encouraged everyone to venture into a direct relationship with Qur’an and live by it. He considered the entire humanity as one people and approached them with love and sincerity. He will go out an extra mile to help the needy, the week and the oppressed people. People are mourning his death all over the world as he has widely travelled to many countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Dr. Khan was the Founding President of World Council of Muslims for Interfaith Relations (WCMIR founded in 2001) and founding trustee of the Council for a Parliament of World’s Religions (CPWR – 1993-1999) and as its Vice-President, chaired Parliament’s International Interfaith Initiatives. He had been actively involved with the International Committee for the Peace Council since its inception in 1994 and was Founding President of The Inter-religious Engagement Project for the Twenty First Century (IEP21).
Dr. Irfan Ahmad Khan has left behind his wife of more than 60 years, five daughters, two sons, 21 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and thousands of disciples, friends and well-wishers. May God rest his soul in peace!.
Dr. Irfan Khan was not only a Quranic scholar, he was a very humble and compassionate human being, always willing to help others. His departure from this temporal world is indeed a great loss for all his followers across the globe. May Allah grant him a great place in Jannah. Ameen.
