Patna, May 9: Undoing injustice with Bihar’s first chief minister Mohammad Yunus, the Bihar Government last week observed his first birth anniversary. The state government organized a function on 4th May at Sri Krishna Memorial Hall here in Patna. State Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav was the Chief Guest.
Adv. Rajendra, Ex- Member, Mahadalit Aayog, Mohammad Kashif Yunus, Chairman, Yunus Foundation and grandson of Mohammad Yunus and many other distinguished guests were present on the occasion. After garlanding the picture of Mohammad Yunus, a paper was presented on him. Also a cultural program was organized on the occasion.
Talking to media after the programme minister and BJP leader Nand Kishore Yadav said Mohammad Yunus was a great freedom fighter and architect of modern Bihar. Adv. Rajender said the lawyers of Bihar are proud that Mohammad Yunus was an Advocate.
Mr. Kashif Yunus, grandson of the first CM of Bihar, thanked the government of Bihar for organising such function in honour of Mohammad Yunus.
While attending a program on Mohammad Yunus in May 2012, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had announced that from next year, the state government would celebrate birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister Mohammad Yunus – and last week was the first such program.
However, it is very interesting to note that the secretariat of the CM Nitish seems to have deleted the name of Mohammad Yunus from the files. The official website of Bihar Assembly carries a list of all chief ministers of the state since the first election held in1937. The list does not have the name of Mohammad Yunus. While it is historic fact that after the election Mohammad Yunus was sworn in as the first chief minister (then called premier) of Bihar and he ran his minority government for four months till Congress came up to form the government and Sri Krishna Singh was made premier. However, the list of all chief ministers of Bihar since 1937 starts with the name of Sri Krishna Singh.
Mohammad Yunus had formed Muslim Independent Party in 1936 with the help of Maulana Abul Mohasin Sajjad (Founder of Imarat-e-Shariah). Mohammad Ali Jinnah persuaded Yunus to merge his party with Muslim League before 1937 election. But he rejected the offer and contested the polls in alliance with Congress. His party emerged second largest party after Congress in Bihar. Yunus took oath as first Premier of Bihar province on 1st April 1937. He led the minority government of his party for about four months till the Congress, the first largest party, decided to form the government. Yunus resigned and Krishna Singh of Congress became chief minister on 20th July 1937.
Mohammad Yunus was born on 4th May 1884 at Panehara village in Masaurhi area of Patna. He was born in a family of lawyers and judges. His father Maulvi Ali Hassan Mukhtar was advocate. His grandfather Maulvi Mohammad Azam retired as District Judge of Munger in Bihar. Now his grandson Kashif Yunus is a practicing lawyer at Supreme Court of India.
Mohammad Younus died of heart attack on 13th May 1952 in London. He was buried there.
