Google Doodle on Sunday honoured educator and social reformer Fatima Sheikh on the occasion of her 191st birth anniversary.
She worked for girls’ education along with Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule. She co-founded the Indigenous Library, one of India’s first schools for girls in 1848.
She lived with her brother Usman, and the siblings opened their house to the Phules after the couple was evicted for attempting to educate people belonging to lower castes. The Indigenous Library was opened in Sheikhs’ house.
In the year 1848, #FatimaSheikh and #SavitriBaiPhule had set up the first school for girls in India.

Sheikh went door-to-door to invite the underprivileged sections in her community to learn at the Indigenous Library. She faced strong opposition from the dominant classes who attempted to humiliate those involved in the movement for girls’ education, but Sheikh and her allies continued their struggle.
“It takes a woman and her unflinching will Flexed biceps to bring about reform in the face of resistance,” Google said in a tweet.
