Hathras UAPA accused Atiqur Rahman to undergo heart surgery at AIIMS, Mathura jail authorities asked to pay Rs. 2 lakh for his treatment

Days after the heath conditions of UAPA accused Atiqur Rahman deteriorated while being taken from Mathura jail to a special court in Lucknow for a hearing, he was advised heart surgery by doctors at AIIMS Delhi.

The AIIMS administration has sought Rs 2 lakh and 10 units of blood for Rahman’s heart surgery from the Mathura jail authorities. The prison authorities have written to Director General of Police/ Inspector General, Prison Administration and Reform Services, U.P seeking Rs. 2 lakh in connection with the same.

In a press note, Rahman’s advocates – Sheeren M Alvi, Frukhan Pathan, Saifan Shaikh – have said that he is suffering from heart-related diseases. His health condition worsened when he was being taken from Mathura in order to be produced in a (Prevention of Money Laundering) PMLA court in Lucknow on 22 September. The escort police and other officials rushed to Chandoli Primary Health Centre, from where he was sent to the district hospital in Agra and then, admitted to Sarojini Naidu Medical College hospital (SNMC) in the same city, on the same day due to his serious medical ailments.

After hearing the argument of senior advocate Pranshu Agarwal on the next day (23 September), PMLA court, Lucknow directed authorities of the Mathura prison to provide proper medical treatment to the accused Atiqur Rehman and ensure the adequate medical facilities are provided to him.

On 8 October, Rahman was taken to AIIMS, Delhi by the jail authorities. The diagnosis was done till the midnight and then he was taken back to the Mathura jail.

Superintendent of Mathura District Jail Mathura submitted a report to the PMLA Court, Lucknow on 12 October. In the report, he said that Rahman is is being given treatment at District Jail Hospital as per the advice of Higher Center, AIIMS, New Delhi. He added that as soon as the said expenditure (Rs. 2 lakh) will be made available Rehman will be sent to AIIMS, New Delhi for treatment.
