Lucknow, May 19: Hundreds of people from Azamgarh, Bhadoi and Varanasi thronged to Mariahu village in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh to get a last glimpse of deceased Khalid Mujahid and take part in the funeral prayers which were offered at 5:30 pm today. Khalid died in mysterious circumstances in police van yesterday afternoon while returning from Faizabad court to Lucknow.
“There is deep silence of sorrow in the village. Markets and bazaars are closed here. People have come from different parts of Jaunpur and neighboring districts also. They silently and peacefully buried the body of Khalid Mujahid,” Mohammad Junaid, an official of Jamiat Ahle Hadees told Muslim Mirror over phone from Khalid’s village. But he added, that the silence may burst into a protest against the government.
Junaid said no government official from Lucknow came to console the bereaved family. Leaders of Muslim political parties like Rashtriya Ulema Council and Qaumi Ekta Dal were present at the funeral, he informed.
He said people demand immediate release of the RD Nimesh Commission report, judicial enquiry into the death of Khalid and tightened security for the co-accused of Khalid who are in jail.
Khalid Mujahid was an accused in the 2007 court blast case. However, his very arrest in Dec. 2007 was probed as fake and illegal by a government appointed RD Nimesh commission and on the basis of which the government of Akhilesh Yadav wanted to withdraw terror cases against him.
As precautionary measure, the district administration of Jaunpur had deployed paramilitary forces across Jaunpur to control any eventuality in view of the public anger.
