Patna : Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday said if Islamic countries can amend their divorce system, then why cannot India follow suit.

Noting that the issue is before the Supreme Court and the central government has already cleared its stand in its reply to the court notice, he said the government stands by gender justice, gender equality and gender dignity in connection with triple talaq issue as per the Constitution.

“After the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the central government in the wake of numerous complaints filed by several Muslim women against the triple talaq issue, the government had replied to the notice,” said Prasad, who was here to attend a meeting of the state Bharatiya Janata Party.

“In our reply to the apex court, we said that in more than a dozen Islamic countries, the triple talaq system has been regulated. So, if in Islamic countries, this system can be regulated, then why not in India which is a secular nation,” he said.

Prasad, a noted lawyer himself, said voices for justice by Muslim women itself suggest that triple talaq can’t be justified under Constitutional provisions as gender justice, non-discrimination and dignity of women are fundamental Constitutional values.—-IANS

  1. Very sad to see BJP fighting for human rights, oh they do really care for humans… what to do policy by policy back fired BJP and now they don’t have any job except poking into others personal business infact their hidden agenda is hindutva with cover page development. Some how they are in media for various petty issue like Gar Wapsi, love jihad, national anti national, tolerance, cow brigade, now Pakistan, latest from Uttar Pradesh Ram temple policy.

  2. I would like to see BJP for job creation, infrastructure development, standing against hate mongers, building country unity reducing farmers death, connecting rivers, protecting constitution rights.

  3. Islamic States, by definition, are meant to go with Sharia, while non-Islamic States have no such compulsion. In fact, while world over non-Islamic State have witness their own people putting down Sharia, why should India, a secular democratic nation, whose constitution fully guarantees freedom of religion, should be so relentless in bring its Muslim citizens, under state control and jurisdiction, except for reasons of vendetta politics of its current rulers, who may not be around in a few years time.

  4. There are several commissions reports on minorities are thrown under the carpet by previous governments as well as BJP new Messiah of Muslim women of India.

Why the party itself allocate reserved quota for Muslim women for upcoming elections?

Women empowerment should be priority of the government rather personal marital affairs of family.
