New Delhi: Jews in Israel are increasingly converting to Islam. Among them are the women who have chosen to embrace Islam and marry Arab men. Such developments have become worrisome for Lehava, an alt-right movement accused of incitement and even terrorism.
The Middle East Monitor, a news portal, reported that although up-to-date statistics are hard to come by, in 2006 it was reported that the number of Jewish converts to Islam in Israel had almost doubled to 70 compared to three years earlier. Since then, the figures have continued to grow. Between 2005 and 2007, 250 Israelis officially converted to Islam, many of whom were women.
Anat Gopstein who co-founded the organisation with her husband Ben-Zion Gopstein in 2005, have raised her concern on Jewish people’s decisions to accept Islam. Her group strictly opposes Jewish assimilation, objecting to most personal relationships between Jews and non-Jews. It is opposed to the Christian presence in Israel.
“It’s hard to give official numbers but we do know that the cases of conversion are on the rise, simply because the assimilation process in Israel has been on the rise too,” explained Gopstein. “The way it works is that women end up converting because they get married to Muslim men, and it presents a problem for us because they are gentiles who take our women away from Judaism.”
Gopstein claims to receive five requests a day for help; some come from women who have converted and want to find a way out, while others are submitted by families or acquaintances who have highlighted claims about abusive relationships.
The actions of Lehava have been denounced by President of Israel Reuven Rivlin as being like “rodents gnawing under the shared democratic and Jewish foundation of Israel”.
Three members of the group were arrested and indicted in 2014 for committing arson and spray-painting anti-Arab graffiti at the Max Rayne Hand in Hand: Center for Jewish Arab Education in Israel (Yad B’Yad) Bilingual School in Jerusalem, and Lehava’s co-founder, Ben-Zion Gopstein, along with other group members, was arrested shortly thereafter for incitement.
