The Supreme Court today halted an anti-encroachment drive in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, where a communal clash broke out during a Hanuman Jayanti procession on Saturday.
Almost nine bulldozers had rolled into the area and started razing structures as per the orders of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).
North Delhi Municipal Corporation is controlled by the BJP. There is heavy police deployment in the area to prevent any law and order situation.
Even after the Supreme Court ordered the halting of the demolition, the demolition drive continued for almost two hours razing down the properties.
The gate of a mosque in the violence-hit district was also demolished by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Tin roofs and encroachments outside shops attached to the mosque were also demolished.
In several videos that surfaced on social media, people were seen pleading with authorities not to demolish their properties.
Opposition leaders expressed their concern over the drive and slammed BJP for this move.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi called the drive “demolition of India’s constitutional values” and “state-sponsored targeting of poor & minorities.”
While accusing Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating communal riots ,Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha asked for demolition of Shah’s home too.
“The Home Minister is himself orchestrating these riots. If you want to use the bulldozer, use it to demolish the Home Minister’s house. That’s how riots will stop,” AAP MP said in a video posted on his Twitter account.
“The BJP has ruled over the municipal bodies for 15 years where their leaders took bribes and allowed illegal construction. Today when they have gone to demolish these illegal constructions, the houses of those BJP leaders who took bribes to allow them should also be demolished too,” he added.
