New Delhi, August 24: Jamia Millia Islamia has awarded Ph.D. degree to Shafeeq ur Rahman for his doctoral thesis on the topic ‘Development of Islamic Economics Thoughts in Indian Subcontinent’ under the supervision of renowned Islamic scholar Prof Akhtarul Wasey (Director, Zakir Hussain Institute of Islamic Studies).
The thesis was officially evaluated by Islamic economist Dr. Manzoor Alam (Chairman, Institute of Objective Studies – IOS). In reference to Indian subcontinent, the study examines the Islamic Economics thoughts of foundry thinkers like Shah Waliullah Dehlvi, Allama Iqbal; Scholar like Maulana Towfail Ahmad Manglori, Maulana Hifzur Rahman Sehvarvi, Maulana Manazir Ahsan Gilani, Maulana Syed Abul Ala Moududi and modern Islamic economists like Dr. Nejatullah Siddiqi, Prof Khursheed Ahmad, Dr. Fazlur Rahman Faridi, Dr. Umar Chapra and Dr. Ausaf Ahmad. Key Islamic economics principles pertain to poverty alleviation, economic empowerment, distribution of wealth, concept of ownership and Riba including its various alternative methods of banking and finance in Islam are also discussed in the thesis.
The study is descriptive, analytical and comparative and is based on the available literature pertaining to Islamic Economics Thought. Essentially, it takes the critical appraisal and evaluation of available materials in the area of Islamic economics thought. Thus, the analysis covers both historical as well as contemporary thinking in order to highlight the phenomena of issues and challenges of Islamic economics thoughts in wider perspective.
Pointing out the importance of topic, Shafeeq ur Rahman explained that there is widely inaccessibility of literature authored by foundry scholars. During the research, he tried to collect the original rare books from the libraries of New Delhi, Aligarh, Deoband, Hyderabad and Pakistan which are being planned by him to digitize and publish online after getting the copyright permission from the concern individual and institutions in the interest of other researchers.
