POLICEDELHINew Delhi, May 4: Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Association (JTSA) has condemned the Delhi Police’s move to detain and deny Yasin Malik the right to peaceful protest here at Jantar Mantar on Friday.

Yasin Malik’s two-day dharna at Jantar Mantar – a space designated as a protest site requiring no permission – was to demand among others the returning of the mortal remains of Afzal Guru to his family in Kashmir. Families of those disappeared and executed by state agencies who had come to Delhi to participate in the protest were also not allowed to reach Jantar Mantar.

JTSA also condemned Press Club of India for not allowing the Kashmiris to hold a press conference there.

“What is even more disconcerting is that the Press Club of India cancelled the booking for a press conference associated with the protest programme. Both the police and the PCI have trotted out similar reasons: fear of counter mobilizations leading to ‘law and order’ problems. In other words, capitulation to the storm troopers by those who are supposed to maintain public order as much by those who ought to be custodians of democracy.  This is a sure sign of the stirrings of fascism,” said JTSA in a statement.
