New Delhi, April 22: Former Chief Justice of India Justice Jagdish Sharan Verma, who headed a three-member committee earlier this year to examine laws on crimes against women, died Monday due to multiple organ failure. He was 80.
Following the December 2012 Delhi gang rape, the central government had formed a three-member commission under the leadership of Justice JS Verma. He had given comprehensive recommendations to check crimes against women. The new anti-rape law passed by Parliament in March this year has incorporated some of the recommendations made by the Justice Verma Commission.
Though the law has come into force, the crimes against women particularly rapes are on without any check across the country. For a week, Delhi is witnessing repeat of December protest at India Gate and Jantar Mantar against the brutal rape of 5-year-old girl who is struggling for life in hospital.
