Bangalore, April 27: In the 2008 Assembly elections, six Muslim candidates had got elected to the 224-member Assembly – five of them were from Congress. This time Congress is contesting all seats and has fielded Muslim candidates. As a pre-poll survey last week said Congress has big edge over ruling BJP and other parties, it is likely more Muslims may enter the house after May 5 poll.
Besides Congress, Janata Dal (Secular) of former prime minister HD Devegoda has also fielded 18 Muslim candidates – the party is contesting 222 seats. Some newly formed Muslim-run political parties like Welfare Party of India and Social Democratic Party of India are also in the fray to open their account in the state assembly.
While BJP is contesting on 223 seats it has not fielded any Muslim candidate.
