Muslims welcome formation of Telangana; Owaisi demands Muslim quota in new state

MP-Asaduddin-OwaisiHyderabad, August 2: After the announcement of Telangana statehood by the Congress party religious, political, and social leaders of the Muslim community welcomed the creation of Telangana and even Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), which had opposed the bifurcation, have accepted the decision. Majlis-e- Tameer-e-Millat, the oldest socio and religious organization of Deccan region and the Nizam state, which is now an ally of MIM issued a statement in favor of Telangana state. Its President and general secretary of all India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Abdur Raheem Qureshi said that we have always been in support of Telangana movement and during the 1969 agitation we were part of the Telangana Praja Samithi. He further said in the state of Telangana Muslims will get justice and the Urdu language and the culture of Hyderabad state will be restored.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, which has strong hold in Andhra Pradesh and also participated in Telangana movement in recent years by conducting rallies and public meeting, also welcomed the decision of Congress party and said that small states are good for the people’s welfare and he expressed his hope that a strong Muslim leadership will emerge in both Telangana and Andhra because the formation of two states. The state head of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Khaja Arif uddin said that before the decision of Congress party we have taken the decision and bifurcated Jamaat-e-Islami as Telangana and Andhra Pradesh units and also we have set up a new office of A.P. unit in Vijaywada.

MIM supremo Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi said in a press conference: Through we have some doubts and differences on this issue but we are accepting the center’s decision on Telangana. He demanded the central govt to come out with a strong policy to control communal forces. He also demand Urdu language be made the first language in Telangana state along with Telugu. Reservation should be given to the Muslims according to their population, he said. The MIM chief expressed his concern over the emergence of communal forces in Telangana. However, he said that the MIM would continue to counter such forces in Telangana and Andhra. He gave assurance that MIM would strengthen its base in both Andhra and Telangana states.

Majlis Bachao Tehreek president Dr. Khayam Khan said that our leader Late Mohd Amaan ullah Khan supported the movement and we follow his idea of Telangana but because of MIM confusion created among the people. Now the decision has come and we will work to protect the interest of the community in the new state of Telangana.

The Welfare Party of India which has recently emerged in political scenario of A.P also supported the cause of Telangana because “it is in the interest of Muslim community and we have already extended our support to the Telangana movement. Now when the decision has come our priority would be to ensure that the marginalized sections of the society including Muslims would be given their due share politically and economically and also in education and we will continue our struggle till the achievement of our objectives.”

The Siasat Urdu daily editor Mr. Zahid Ali Khan expressed his happiness and said that the percentage of Muslims would be greater in Telangana state that would help Muslims to play an important role. He is hopeful that Muslim’s economic conditions will improve. He said smaller states are always better for the development of the region.

Overall, the Muslims of Telangana region got relief wtih the announcement of Telangana state and they are expecting that some change will occur in the lives of Muslims and they are seeing it as a ray of hope.
