New Delhi: The figure of working people across communities in India, released last week, shows lowest share of Muslims among all the communities in India. As per Census 2011, only 33% Muslims are working as compared to other communities. This is lower than the nationwide average work participation rate of 40%.
Drawn from the Census 2011 data, the statistics show a faith-based profile of India’s 482 million strong workforce.
Other communities like Jains and Sikhs stands at 36% each. Buddhists, comprising mostly Dalits who embraced Buddhism last century, have a high working population share at 43%. For Hindus, the figure is 41%.
The data released shows that the figures haven’t changed much from the 2001 Census, indicating a status quo in the economic status of communities.
The key reason behind low work participation rates in some communities seems to be the low work participation of women folks. Women’s participation is just 15% for Muslims and Sikhs, and even lower at 12% among Jains. Among Hindus, there are 27% working women, while it is 31% for Christians and 33% for Buddhists. Several smaller faiths fall under ‘Other Religions’. The Other Religions are mostly tribal communities.Almost 48% of members of this section work. Women’s work participation is highest in these communities, at nearly 44%.
The Census data also gave a pattern of how many are engaged in what kind of work. Of the total 33% working people of Muslims 41% of them are engaged in agriculture work,52% in service and industry and rest 7% in others.
The main reason is Madrasa education, religious studies in early childhood has no place in modern world, children should be cultivated with curiosity to nature and science.
Once they grow let them discover philosophies of God etc.
I expect an article on how Madrasa only education for Muslim children hurts their career.
