The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) while MLAs of BJP and AIADMK walked out of the house in protest against the same.
The resolution was moved by Chief Minister MK Stalin, who said the law is against the constitutional secular principles and would not be good for religious harmony in the nation.
“As per established democratic principles, a country should be governed taking into consideration the aspirations and concerns of the people belonging to all sections of the society. But, it is clearly seen that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was passed in such a way that it does not accord warm support to the refugees considering their plight, but instead discriminates them according to their religion and their country of origin,” Stalin said.
PMK, an ally of AIADMK, which had voted in support of the CAA in both houses of the parliament in 2019, supported the anti-CAA resolution in the state assembly.
The CAA intends to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. But critiques believe that it is a part of the Hindu nationalist BJP-led government’s plan to strip Muslim Indian of their citizenship.
