New Delhi: Former Judge Supreme Court, Justice Markandey Katju, who is known for calling a spade a spade, dubbed the “Father of Hindutva” Vinayak Damodar Savarkar as “the British agent” who used to ‘spew venom’ against Muslims in order to “serve” the British policy of divide and rule.
In his blog on the 137th birth anniversary of Savarkar ( 1883-1966 ), under the title “The Truth About ‘Veer’ Savarkar”, Justice Katju said Savarkar ”collaborated” with the Colonial government.
Without taking the name of RSS-BJP, Justice Katju said, “Many people have praised him as a great freedom fighter, but what is the truth about him”?
“The truth is that many nationalists during British rule were arrested by the British, and given long sentences. In jail the British authorities would give them an offer: either collaborates with us, in which case we will free you, or rot in jail for the rest of your life.”
Referring to his mercy petition, Justice Katjus said Sarvarkar had become a “collaborator”.
“After serving over 10 years in jail, the British evidently made the offer of collaboration, which Savarkar accepted. On coming out of jail he started preaching Hindu communalism, and became a British agent, serving the British policy of divide and rule.”
Most of them became collaborators, including Savarkar; Justice Katju added who is also former chairman of Press Council of India.
Savarkar was a “nationalist” only till 1910 when he was arrested, and given two life sentences.
Sarvarkar, a Chitpavan Brahmin, who had first propagated the two-nation theory, had spent sometime in the Cellular Jail Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In the write up, Justice Katju further stated:
“Savarkar as president of the Hindu Mahasabha, during the Second World War, advanced the slogan “Hinduize all Politics and Militarize Hindudom”; he decided to support the British war effort in India seeking military training for the Hindus.
When the Congress launched the Quit India movement in 1942, Savarkar criticised it and asked Hindus to stay active in the war effort and not disobey the government, He urged the Hindus to enlist in the armed forces to learn the “arts of war”, but this appeal was made selectively to Hindus.”
Quoting this, he asked, “Can this man (Savarkar) be respected and praised as a freedom fighter?
On the controversy to accord Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the Republic of India to Savarkar, the former SC judge said the real veers(hero) were Bhagat Singh, Surya Sen ( Masterda ), Chandrashekhar Azad, Bismil, Ashfaqulla, Rajguru, Khudiram Bose, etc
“The real veers were Bhagat Singh, Surya Sen (Masterda), Chandrashekhar Azad, Bismil, Ashfaqulla, Rajguru, Khudiram Bose, etc who were mostly hanged by the British. What was so ‘veer’ about Savarkar? He had become a British agent after 1910.”
Many readers reacted on Justice Katju’s blog on Savarkar praising for his plain speak.
One Arun Mehta said ‘Nelson Mandela 27 year prison, solitary confinement, he never surrendered, you asshole.”
Another reader Dr Pawa Kumar Aryan said:
“Goro ka paltu kuttaa, (pet dog of the British government) Hansraj and many such veers. Not only he played Jinha in United-parted India but also actively murdered Gandhi. He was abaiter of murder crime. Godse and the present day ilk of RSS took his words and shoots real Gandhi, his effigy and Dalit-Muslims.”
