A total of seven petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the Places of Worship (Special Provision) 1991 Act by members and leaders of the Hindu community who wants conversion of several mosques into temples across the country.
The latest petition was filed by Devkinandan Thakur, a Hindu religious leader who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura.
The law prohibits conversion of the character of any place of worship – except Babri Masjid – as they existed on 15 August 1947. Thus, it gives legal protection to places of worship as Gyanvapi Mosque and Shahi Edgah.
Hindu groups are campaigning for conversion of the aforementioned mosques as well as other monumental sites such Jama Masjid, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid inside the Qutub complex into temples. Hence, they want the top court to nullify the validity of the law.
