Guwahati : Student leader Sharjeel Imam, who is currently lodged in the Guwahati Central Jail in Assam, has tested positive for novel coronavirus.
A team of Delhi Police, which is currently in Assam to bring Sharjeel Imam back, has decided to delay his transfer after Sharjeel was tested positive for novel coronavirus.
But before his transfer, Sharjeel Imam and the Delhi Police team were screened for Covid-19. While the police team tested negative, the student activist’s sample came back positive.
Delhi Police has now decided to delay Sharjeel Imam’s transfer till he is cured of the disease and his report is negative.
Sharjeel is a PhD student at the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) Centre for Historical Studies and has been accused of making inflammatory speeches which led to violence outside Jamia Milia Islamia University in December last year. He has been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
An FIR was registered against him by Delhi Police on January 25 under IPC sections 124 A (sedition) and 153 A (promoting or attempting to promote disharmony or feelings of enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community or any other ground whatsoever) among others.
