Kanpur : Democracy is not driven by lofty words but by the passion of individuals committed to reach a consensus among people with different desires. It holds true in the event of election to the management of Sir Syed Education Society – Kanpur, a platform run by the fraternity of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to promote quality education.
The AMU fraternity of Kanpur has indeed set an example by conducting a fair election for Executive Committee of the Society holding all democratic norms. The fraternity also elected all its office bearers unanimously for next three year term 2021-24. Elections were held for the positions of 15 executive members. However, several candidates tied with their opponents with equal votes, but one of the elected members withdrew his name leading to amicable solution.
The development is seen as a remarkable event at a time when groupism and rifts have literally marred a number of associations run by AMU alumni.
“The ice was broken when Mr. Choudhry Ehteshamul Islam withdrew his name and others followed him paving the way to reach a consensus and elect one candidate for each post,” said president elect advocate Sharfuddin Ahmad.
Former chief election commissioner Dr Nasim Zaidi, who is the founder member of the Society, played a key role in the process.
Advocate Sharfuddin Ahmad was elected president while Vaqar-ul-Amin became vice president. Ismael Syed and retired professor Dr. Masarrat Ali Khan have been elected secretary general and joint secretary respectively while Taj Alam became treasurer.
The members of Executive Committee include Shahid Mahboob, Dr, Suhaib Ahsan, A.J Sami, Salahuddin Ahmad, Tanseef Ahmad, Mohd. Rashid Khan, and S. Shariq Ibrahim.
The president elect advocate Sharfuddin Ahmad is the Vice President of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). He is Secretary General of All India Lawyers Council (AILC) and Trustee of Empower India Foundation which is rendering yeoman services throughout the country. Mr Ahmad is also serving as the Chief Trustee of Masawaat Foundation, primarily engaged in healthcare and education, intensely preparing to establish paramedical institutes to promote job oriented courses and training to strengthen basic structure in rural India for the poor and needy persons.
Mr. Ahmad expressed his happiness and thanked all his fellows. He particularly thanked Election In-charge Sheikh Misbahul Haq for conducting the election fairly besides facilitating the smooth formation of Executive Committee of Sir Syed Educational Society.
He added that the society shall focus on providing cheaper and divergent education to students belonging to the marginalised section.
The Society, over the years, has managed to established two schools – Sir Syed Public School, Jajmau – where more than 1800 students are enrolled, besides taking part a series of educational activities in Kanpur, helping students obtain quality education.
Since Mr. Idris Ahmad, Ch Ehtesham ul Islam and Mr Ahsan Rasheed withdrew thier candidature paving the way to reach a unanimous decision the committee accommodated their names for the membership of Executive Committee,
Alhamdulillah
Very good ,if this thing is happen in every other minority institution.
Every society /Trust needs transparency and democracy.
The work done by this society is admirable. Hope it will do even better in future by being led by finer leaders.
This society was established in 1991 so they took 30 odd years to established only 2 School & now only 1800 students are there. Now with the new management i’m expecting they should do some analysis why quality of education & strength of student not up to the higher scale & what step they will take forward to uplift the quality of education & staff competecny.
best wishes to newly electwd members
Dr. Asif Mohammd
