Six members of banned group Students Islamic Movement of India were shifted from the Bhopal central jail to the prison hospital late Saturday night after their health deteriorated a week after they began a hunger strike, Hindustan Times reported on Monday.
Bhopal central jail superintendent Dinesh Nargave said, “They are demanding better food, opposing regular frisking and freedom from high-security block.”
Haider Nagori, brother of one of the six prisoners Safdar Nagori said that they have been on hunger strike for the past one week protesting against the inhuman treatment they are being given in the jail. He added that jail authorities have not informed his family about the well-being of Safdar. He said he came to know about the development through newspapers. Apparently, families of other five prisoners, too, are unaware of the situation inside the jail. He described the developments in an interview with Clarion India.
Haider said his family has not been allowed to see Safdar ever since lockdown was announced in March.
Besides Safdar Nagori, those hospitalised are Mohammad Ansar, Saduli PA, Shibily, Qammruddin Nagori and Hafiz Hussain. They are serving life sentence given by Indore Sessions Court in 2017. They were held guilty of collecting arms and waging war against the government of India. They are also facing cases in several courts throughout India.
Nargave stated that 28 SIMI members are lodged in the Bhopal central jail. Out of them, 18 had been shifted to solitary confinement to avoid a recurrence of the jailbreak incident that happened in October 2016. On an imortant note, the Bhopal jail officials had alleged that eight SIMI members escaped by Killing a guard on the intervening night of 30-31 October in 2016 but later all of them were killed by the police.
Hindustan Times quoted Madhuri, a human rights activist as saying ” “The SIMI members have been harassed by jail authorities for the past three years. Recently Qammaruddin moved an application in Ahmedabad court, where he and other five are facing a trial for Sabarmati jailbreak, against physical and mental torture on him,”
“Even, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in its report submitted in March 2018 clearly said that SIMI operatives were being tortured physically and mentally in the Bhopal central jail. But the state government and jail authorities did not improve the condition. The jail authorities have only custodial rights and they don’t have any right to torture them,” she added.
