Former Vice President Hamid Ansari said that Muslim feel they are being ill-treated and are hurt by the prejudice they face. He added that steady weakening of secularism is endangering India’s future.

In an interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire, he criticised political parties over low representation of Muslims in politics. He said that there is a “disinclination” by parties to choose Muslims as electoral candidates.

Commenting on low representation of Muslim in government services, he said that the responsibility lies on both sides – community and government. He said that members of the community did not push themselves to get government jobs in the past. He further indicated that he believes “to some extent” the system is militating against Muslims getting jobs.
