New Delhi: Working journalists’ body, the Delhi Union of Journalists on Friday welcomes the Supreme Court order allowing bail to journalist and former secretary of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists Delhi unit Siddique Kappan in the UAPA case against him.  The DUJ also expressed solidarity with Kappan and said it would continue to stand with Kappan in the legal fight against the false cases filed against him by the UP government to deflect attention from the heinous crime.

Though delayed, this bail order is most welcome. We now hope that bail will also be granted to Kappan in another case filed against him under the PMLA and he will be out of jail, it added.

“The DUJ appreciates the efforts taken by the family, colleagues and friends of Kappan, the KUWJ and advocates including senior lawyer Kapil Sibal to ensure  justice for Kappan. The DUJ has been at the forefront in the protests against the illegal arrest of Kappan”.

The DUJ will continue to stand with Kappan in the legal fight against the false cases filed against him. The bail order it feels, is historic as it upholds and protects the freedom of expression in the face of multiple threats today۔

Kappan has been in jail since October 5, 2020. He was arrested near Mathura while on his way to cover developments after the gruesome rape and murder of a Dalit girl in Hathras, UP.
