The Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) has released a disturbing report documenting a sharp increase in violence and civil rights violations following the recent election results. According to the report, eight lynchings, six incidents of mob violence, and three cases of unlawful demolitions have occurred since the poll results were announced.
Lynchings
The report highlights eight lynchings that took place in various states. These incidents predominantly targeted minority communities, with most victims accused of cow slaughter or other activities deemed unacceptable by extremist groups. The APCR has called for immediate judicial intervention and protection for the affected communities.
Mob Violence
Six incidents of mob violence were recorded, characterized by large groups attacking individuals or communities based on rumors or unverified accusations. These attacks have led to significant injuries and, in some cases, fatalities. The APCR emphasizes the role of social media in spreading false information that incites these violent outbreaks.
Demolition Incidents
Several homes belonging to Muslims were demolished by authorities in Mandla, Madhya Pradesh, allegedly on the pretext of possession of cow meat. However, the police claimed that the reason for the demolition was that the houses were built on government land.
Authorities in Madhya Pradesh demolished the homes of four Muslim men shortly after detaining them on charges of throwing bovine remains at a temple in Jawra, Ratlam district. This occurred even as the Madhya Pradesh High Court was hearing a petition against the impending demolition drive. The administration issued backdated demolition notices dated June 14, on June 16 around 12:30 PM, and demolitions began shortly afterward. The court granted a stay order around 2:30 PM, but the houses had already been demolished between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM.
Another large-scale demolition was carried out in the Akbarnagar locality in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.
The APCR’s report paints a grim picture of the post-election period in India, highlighting a significant surge in violence and rights violations. The organization’s call for action aims to prompt governmental and societal efforts to restore peace and ensure justice for the affected communities.
